Recycling and the environment is something that is on everybody’s mind, so it seems pertinent that scrapping a car is covered by legislation to make sure that no harm is done to anyone or anything involved.

Firms that scrap any sort of vehicle must adhere to strict government regulation and work with the DVLA to ensure that all everything it kept on record.

Other legislations that must be adhered to include workplace safety mandates to protect both breakers working on the vehicle and the environment when working with hazardous materials such as oil and mercury.

Every year thousands of vehicles are disposed of incorrectly, costing the government and in turn the tax payer millions. Remember that only licensed scrappage firms are able to authorise the distribution of documentation such as Certificates of Destruction (COD) and End of Life Vehicle certificates (ELV). If you do not get these documents within 30 working days of the vehicle being taken contact the DVLA or your local authority, as without official valid certification you could face a fine up to and exceeding £100.

Always follow up with the DVLA over vehicle ownership, if the scrappage firm does not transfer or remove your ownership you could still be responsible for the vehicle even after it has left your possession

Services such as Scrap Car only work with accredited breakers and scrappage firms who have been inspected by local government, health authorities and environmental agencies to ensure that they follow all legislation and provide an environmentally friendly site.

Land Rover has announced there will be no charge to replace the radius arm in vehicles purchased or built between 2007 and 2011.

The announcement comes as part of a ‘No charge customer satisfaction program’ that is being rolled out by the British manufacturer due to a number of reported chassis failures.

The firm are advising users who have not heard from their supplier to contact the nearest Land Rover dealer and quote Programme number Q135.

Radius arms (sometimes known as radius rods) control wheel motion and for the longitudinal plane through links with the axis. They can also be easily adapted to suit vehicles with a strong torque such as drag racers.

The problem faced by Land Rover caused the fixing of the radius arm to the chassis to crack and potentially fail in a way described by experts as ‘catastrophic’.

The chassis on the vehicles concerned is said to have split from the cab right down to the radius arm splitting it essentially in two. So far there have been no reported injuries from the failures however it reinforces the importance of keeping your vehicle maintained and keeping an eye on manufacturers websites for any notifications.

Trying to avoid dealing with companies when scrapping your vehicle may seem like a good idea at the time but it can be more difficult, time consuming and expensive than you could ever imagine.

Deciding you want to scrap a vehicle is the easiest part of this process, you must then take it to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) who may then charge you to take the vehicle off your hands.

Once the vehicle has been scrapped you then need to obtain the correct documentation, which again could be at a cost to you. All scrappages must be confirmed as being environmentally sound by the Environmental agency for England and Wales based in Bristol (BS32 4UB) and by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) if in Scotland who can be found in Stirling (FK9 4TR).

Working with a firm when trying to get cash for scrap cars can often be the best option, scrap car has network set up with breakers and scrap yards throughout the UK making sure that you get a comprehensive and easy service.

All our firms are verified by environmental agencies and local councils so you any documentation from a Certificate of Destruction (COD) to a DVLA End of Life Vehicle (ELV) can be issued directly from the breaker. Meaning all you have to do is apply for refunds on things such as car tax.

You can even get a vehicle registration retention document and sell your number separately to make more money.

It’s almost two years to the day that Gordon Brown announced an scheme designed to kick-start the UK car industry which had been hugely affected by the recession.

The initiative, launched on the 22 April 2009 offered a £2000 credit towards a new car when you traded in a vehicle that was over 10 years old.

Alistair Darling when launching the scheme said:

“ We just want to help the UK’s motor industry, which has been one of Britain’s success stories.”

It was predicted the scrappage scheme would benefit almost 300,000 people and cost the government around £300 million. It also followed suit from Germany who launched a similar scheme the month before and found that sales jumped almost 40% from the previous March, compare this to the UK whose sales slumped by almost 40% the same month.

Two years on sales of cars in the UK have yo-yo’d though have not hit the low they once were. Scrap car on the other hand is now booming business, with people now viewing it as a simple, efficient option when wanting to get rid of a vehicle.

Established services such as Scrap Car offer customers a comprehensive service where users can dispose of their vehicle economically and following all EU and UK legislations.

A number of sites also advertise free vehicle collection meaning your car doesn’t even have to be running in order to be traded for me money, however some will only offer a choice of collection or payment. Scrap-Car works using a comprehensive online auction system so dealers can bid on vehicles and you can get the price you want.

Working with a network of accredited garages and breakers also means that as soon as you list your vehicle an alert will be sent to local services, making life even easier for you.

Ford today revealed that there will be a massive shortage of electronic parts in the wake of the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami tragedy.

Toyota and Honda in Japan have announced temporary shut-downs as a result of the quake with General Motors in the US even shutting down as they cannot obtain parts.

A Spokesperson for car manufacturers Ford said:

“We have automotive plants that are shutting down because they can’t get an adequate supply of those parts that are needed of producing electronics for going into automobiles.”

The components that are currently in short supply are key in the production of Ford transmission systems, and Ford brake master cylinders and consumers are advised to buy used Ford parts such as used Ford Brake Calipers

Experts are already predicting that it could take up to six months for plants in Japan to be up and running at full capacity again. Both electronic and motor companies have already started looking for suppliers in other countries.

Manufacturers have stressed that their will be no increase in price because of the shortage but Data Analyst Dale Ford commented:

“The laws of supply and demand are in place and if there’s a shortage or even a perceived shortage there may be some increase in the price or lessening of bargaining power.”

If the situation in the Far East doesn’t improve it could start effecting customers in the US and UK as early as next month (April).

Consumers needing parts that are being delayed due to the parts shortage may well be advised to look at finding these parts through parts finder sites.

Companies such as Car Part Buyer and other parts finder services with links to millions of shelved car parts. All customers need to do is fill in a simple form online, quotes are then made available to them through a unique web based system. Taking all the hassle of trawling around breaker yards away.

The iconic Volkswagen Beetle was first produced in 1938 and was still being turned out of factories until the back end of 2003. Over 21 million of these classics were made, making them one of the most mass-produced cars in the World.

Replacement parts and customisation are both easy and popular due to the availability and cheap prices of parts. Like classic Mini Coopers you can pick up official parts for a fraction of the costs compared to other vehicles.

One of the popular modifications within the Beetle community is to change the wheels and lower the suspension but there are other, more complex alterations that people have made. An example of this would be the Dune Buggy and Baja Bug modifications which originated in California in the late 1960’s and involved converting the classic Beetle into an off-road vehicle.

But its not only modifications that parts are needed for. As Beetles have not been produced for nearly seven years then its likely that every owner has either needed or will be needing spare parts. A fully rebuilt engine for a Volkswagen Beetle can cost as little as £50. Compare this to a Ford Fiesta engine which will set you back £100 at the very least, and that’s on Ebay.

The Beetle has become one of the most iconic vehicles of all time thanks to it unique shape and reliability, just because production has ceased there is no reason why you can’t buy one of these and expect to get a long life out of it.

An investigation into the accidents involving subsequently recalled Toyota’s has revealed that the Japanese companies electronic were not to blame.

The announcement also showed that in “virtually all” cases where the driver had said they pushed the brake they had actually touched the accelerator.

The announcement will come as a relief to Toyota as since the incidents came to light they have had to recall over eight million vehicles world wide.

A spokesperson for the investigators said that factors for the accidents included “pedal entrapment, sticky pedal and foreign objects in the car”, the panel also highlighted “pedal misapplication” as a major cause of the accidents.

But many have criticised the findings describing them as “biased” and “wrong.” Car-safety advocate Joan Clybrook formerly of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) said:

"That is totally ludicrous, they should be looking at the electronics in their cars and everyone knows it."

Toyota will still face up to 325 lawsuits as a result of the incidents, one of which caused the deaths of four people. In one US case a man driving a Toyota in an accident was freed from jail after suggestion that it was not his fault and the car had malfunctioned.

Officials in Northern Ireland confirmed that they have seized a batch of brake pads that had been falsely labelled as Renault.

The parts which were found after a tip off were examined and discovered to be held together with glue making them highly dangerous.

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment commented that there was “no way” the parts would ever have passed the required braking friction level that would make the roadworthy.

Damien Doherty from the Trading Standards Service said:

"In the past, counterfeit car parts were mainly non-safety items such as window wipers, mud flaps and car interior accessories. Now, counterfeit items such as brake pads, brake shoes, suspension components and steering linkages are readily available on the market.”

Brake pads are crucial to the braking system and any faults or wear in them could have disastrous consequences.

Buyers have been warned to take care when buying parts and to only use reputable dealers such as CarSpareFinder or Car Part Buyer who can search dealer and breakers nationwide to find you the best deal whatever part you need.

Whether it’s Renault parts that you need or any other make the site will search legitimate and carefully chosen dealers without you having to leave your computer screen.
